What are the voting patterns of Czech men and women? Members of the Network of Women discussed EU election results with sociologist Martin Buchtík

Results of the EU Parliament election have been known for over a month. Since then, we’ve had the chance to read a number of political analyses and analyses of the election’s consequences for the future of different EU policies. But what do the results say about Czech society? And what exactly makes Czech voters decide who they’re going to vote for or whether they’re going to vote at all?

Members of the Network of Women in Czech Foreign, European and Security Policy discussed these and other questions with sociologist and Executive Director of the STEM Institute for Empirical Research, Martin Buchtík. During the summer meeting of the Network, which took place on the ninth of July, he and the Network members looked back on the topic of EU elections.

The Network met in large numbers and many stimulating questions, pertaining among other things to the nature of Czech political parties’ election campaigns or the voting behaviors of Czech men and women, were asked. Martin Buchtík spoke about long-term trends which he and his colleagues at STEM observe in Czech society, while also noting the aspects of the election which surprised him.

One of these surprises was the unexpectedly high electoral gain of the Přísaha and Motoristé coalition. A portion of the debate was devoted to the reasons for this group’s success, but there was also room for the topic of the recently approved postal vote or other possible changes to the electoral law.
